Halifax experience with Discount was very different from in Ontario

In early May, my husband and I booked online with Discount in Halifax to rent a car for 9 days during a trip we would be taking in August of this year. I called a week before we were to pick up the rental to confirm everything was good with the booking and to ask if we could get a ride from the place we would be staying at in Halifax to the rental office, which was easily arranged. The morning that we were due to be picked up to get the rental, at 7:30am, I received a phone call from Discount and was told there were no vehicles available that day. I was shocked. We had made plans to travel far from Halifax and only to return in the evening for a work meeting I had scheduled. I asked how could this happen, I had confirmed and booked a car and would be paying for 9 days and I was just told 'I know'. No apology or anything. I asked what the next step was and they told me I would be called when something was available. Throughout the day I checked in with the office, every 3 or 4 hours, and the last time I called was right before 5 (the office was closing at 5:30). That time, I spoke to the manager and she told me a car was now available. Because my meeting was at 5 there was no way to pick up the car within 5 minutes (I now wonder if I would have known anything was available that day had I not called again just before 5pm), so, we arranged to have someone pick us up the following morning so we could get the car from the rental office. The following morning, there was a delay in someone from Discount picking us up and when we arrived at Discount the only options were big vehicles like SUVs or a large sedan. What we had requested was an economy car, something that would be small and easy to park and cost effective when it comes to gas. Although the large sedan was new and spacious, which might have been ideal for some clients, we were really uncomfortable about driving such a big car and the extra gas costs we would incur. Moreover, it had not been properly cleaned (the outside was wet, but the dirt marks had not been scrubbed off and the inside was dirty with food on the floor of the car) and the tank was less than full. There were some more issues with sorting out the booking and payment which we realize may have been due to the online system, but if I had not mentioned each thing it would have gone unnoticed. First, they still wanted to charge us for the 9 days, when a car was not even made available to us the first day of the booking. Second, the booking we made was for unlimited km and we were told upon picking up the car that the limit would actually be 3,000 km (they checked the original booking, noted the error, then changed the limit to 10,000 km). Third, when I told them we would only pay for the 8 days that we actually had the car, they wanted to charge for 8 days but only give it to us for 7 (pick up at 8:30am one Saturday, return it 8:30am the next Saturday). Our original drop off time was supposed to be 12:30pm, which we booked online, so I insisted we were allowed to drop it off by then - we were paying for the eighth day as it was. Also, no one explained to us how the car drop off worked if the office was closed (on Saturdays it closed at 12pm, so we would have had no idea what to do, but fortunately we returned the car early and could speak with an attendant). The process of picking up the car took 2 hours, which cut down on more of our travel time, although the attendant was patient and apologized for the issues this time. When we returned the car the following week, everything went well and we did not have to wait too long to get a ride back to the place we were staying at. Having used Discount before in Ontario on two occasions (renting a cube truck for moving purposes), we had expected similar customer service when using Discount in another province. None of the staff were rude - in fact, all of the staff were nice to talk to on a personal level - but they expressed a feeling of indifference towards the issues, including the complete lack of vehicles, and we felt that was very unprofessional. I expect to continue using Discount, at least here in Ontario, but I think if it's possible that no cars will be available or that there may be other issues, there should be some sort of notice on the online booking platform. At least that way clients would know to be prepared for the unexpected. In the end, everything turned out okay, but it was definitely a service experience that I feel we never should have gone through - these situations can be avoided with better communication and attention on the part of Discount.
